All true, but also strangely irrelevant to what I always thought was the actual function of liberalism: to provide a kind of Geneva Convention for competing political forces with their own substantive visions of the Good. Or at least, I'm pretty sure this is what they taught me in history classes: about Liberalism as a way of ending the European wars of religion.
